In a perfect world, sixteen-year-old Phoebe Martins’ life would be a book. Preferably a YA novel with magic and a hot paranormal love interest. Unfortunately, her life probably wouldn’t even qualify for a quiet contemporary. But when Phoebe finds out that Dev, the hottest guy in the clarinet section, might actually have a crush on her, she turns to her favorite books for advice. Phoebe overhauls her personality to become as awesome as her favorite heroines and win Dev’s heart. But if her plan fails, can she go back to her happy world of fictional boys after falling for the real thing?
Dev: *winks at Phoebe and Lisa* Yeah. 5 foot ten of book-worthy hotness, right here.
Phoebe: *snorts and pulls out cards* Sure.
Dev: I’m deeply hurt by your dismissal of my book boyfriend status.
Phoebe: You’ll survive. Okay, what’s your favorite color?
Dev: Green, kind-of close to the color of that dress you wore to Homecoming… without the glitter.
Phoebe: Favorite Food?
Dev: First, the readers know I’m vegetarian, right? So if they’re expecting burgers, that’s a no. But I really like the grilled cheese sticks and tomato soup they have at school.
Phoebe: Yeah, I know. You stole half of mine the other day.
Dev: It’s not my fault you have good taste in food, too.
Phoebe: Readers are dying to know about your book-boyfriend-ish hobbies.
Dev: Aren’t book boyfriend-ish hobbies things like swordfighting and lurking in the shadows under a girl’s window to protect her from evil forces trying to abduct her or something? I don’t do stuff like that.
Phoebe: Very funny.
Dev: I thought so. Okay, my non-book boyfriendish hobbies are acting, theatre club, clarinet, and marching band. I’m a well-rounded music nerd.
Phoebe: Speaking of music, what’s your favorite band?
Dev: Everything. I love music, period. Except that really cheesy Eurovision stuff you and your friends get into every year.
Phoebe: Those singing Russian grandmothers were amazing.
Dev: Says the girl who can’t carry a tune.
Phoebe: I’ll have you know that some of Europe’s best musical talent goes to that contest.
Dev: Europe is apparently incredibly cheesy.
Lisa: Phoebe? Dev? How about you two get back to the interview?
Phoebe: Oh, sorry, Lisa. Okay, these cards say they’re supposed to be the “really” book-boyfriend-y questions.
Dev: Sounds like fun. Bring them on.
Phoebe: *clears throat* What’s your idea of a perfect date?
Dev: I’d probably take her to Marranos for water ice and maybe try some sort of new sport, like, I don’t know, maybe archery?
Phoebe: Oh, that sounds really nice. Please describe your perfect book-girlfriend.
Dev: My perfect book girlfriend? Okay. She’d be a girl who is really smart and creative and not afraid to be a little bit geeky. She’d be someone who cares a lot about her friends. I like girls who are passionate about the things they love. And I like girls who like things like reading.
Phoebe: Reading is…good.
Phoebe: *stares at the next card* *freezes* Who put this question in here? Did Em make up some of these questions?? *looks at Lisa, who shrugs* Okay… *takes a deep breath* Do you like bookworms?
Phoebe: *squints at the next card* Is there a girl at school that you like a lot?
Dev: Yes. She’s really smart and pretty and funny.
Phoebe: Oh. She sounds nice.
Dev: She really is. I think you’d like her.
Phoebe: *looks at the next card* Oh, frack, no. I’m not asking this. *throws away card, clears throat again* Okay. Questions over.
Dev: What did that last card say?
Phoebe: Let’s forget about the cards. *looks at Lisa again, who makes a “get on with it” motion* Okay, there’s this thing I see a lot on blogs. Rapid fire questions. So, say the first thing that comes to your mind when I ask the next few questions. Okay?
Phoebe: Favorite book?
Dev: The Sentinel series that you talked me into reading.
Phoebe: Oh, that’s, uhm… good. Favorite movie?
Dev: Bollywood? Lagaan. Hollywood? It’s a toss-up between The Lord of the Rings and classic Star Wars.
Phoebe: Nerd. What do you want to be when you grow up?
Dev : A neurosurgeon. C’mon, Feebs, you know this answer.
Phoebe: It’s not for me, it’s for the blog readers.
Dev: Okay, fine, I want to be an actor. I’d especially love to work on Broadway someday.
Phoebe: Favorite class in school?
Dev: English, because some of my classmates are pretty awesome. And lunch.
Phoebe: Favorite musical?
Dev: Usually whichever one I’m acting in at the moment. But, there’s this amazing production of Spring Awakening by the Deaf West Theatre company I saw the last time I went to New York. Watching it was so exciting because I was all, YES, this is the future of theatre and it’s amazing and I can’t even imagine the hours of work they had to put in just to make the sign language timing line up with the music. But it also makes me wonder why I bother even trying because they were so, so good, and I’m never going to be at that level, you know?
Phoebe: I think you’re an amazing actor. Broadway would be stupid not to take you.
Dev: Thanks. And I think you’re an amazing interviewer.
Phoebe: *blushes* Okay, I’m going to stop while I’m ahead. Thanks for the interview.
Dev: Thank you for interviewing me, Phoebe, and thanks for hosting us, Lisa!
Lisa: Thanks so much for stopping by, you two. It’s been a blast!
Seriously… how adorable are those two?! ♥
