From USA Today Bestselling Author, Renee Carlino, comes a totally unique love story that is sure to make you question what's out there . . . or who. "My guardian angel is a drunk." Evelyn Casey's life is at a standstill. She's in her mid-twenties, struggling with the dating scene in San Francisco. Nothing seems to be working out, and she's starting to think that she'll live out her days in her crummy apartment with her overbearing roommate, Brooklyn. It's absurd, but sometimes Evey longs for a guardian angel to show up and save the day. And then he does. Seriously. His name is Lucian and he's a guardian angel, been on the job for two thousand years. His sudden presence in her life is both good-he's brilliant, witty, and warm-and bad-he's brilliant, witty, warm, and hot as ----. But as perfect as Lucian seems, he's got problems of his own. He's taken up drinking and he's brazenly inserted himself into Evey's life, going against the greatest cosmic law ever created. For Evey, the rules are simple: You are not allowed to hook up with your guardian angel. But sometimes fulfilling your destiny requires a leap of faith, a confrontation with God. Yes, God as in God."

“Maybe after I was gone, she would remember me and be tormented. Or maybe I’d have to watch her die, and I’d be tormented. And then I realized, that is love. That is life. Brutal and beautiful all in the same..”

I was so excited to receive a review copy of Lucian Divine! I am a huge Renee Carlino fan and loved Before We Were Strangers and Swear On This Life so I was very eager to read this one. I thought it was amazing that she stepped out of the box and went with a different type of story.

Lucian has been a guardian angel for 2000 years, he has had many people to watch over but Evey is different. Lucian has found himself in love with Evey and making poor decisions when it comes to keeping his distance from her. Evey is in her 20’s and having a horrible time in the dating world, when Lucian reveals himself to her things get a bit confusing and messy for both of them.

I tried so hard to like Lucian, but in all honesty I wasn’t a huge fan, he confused me and his drunken, reckless behavior at the beginning of the book really put him in a bad light for me. He did redeem himself more as the book went on though. Evey was more likable, even though her naivete turned me off a bit. As the book goes on, I really began to like these two a lot more. The first impressions began to wear off and far more redeeming characteristics were revealed.

I really struggled with the romance and it felt like insta-love to me. Evey and Lucian did have a back story so I understand that it wasn’t insta-love in the true sense of the term. However, I did not feel that the relationship was developed enough for me and that is where I struggled with it the most. It just didn’t feel believable to me.

Renee Carlino really impressed me with her ability to step out of the box with this book. While this may not be my favorite book by her I really respect her ability to take a risk and try something new. I love her writing and the redemption her characters always seem achieve through her books. I am a fan and always will be, I am excited to see what she writes next!

Thanks for the review. But, I don’t think this book is for me. Insta-love is the first big turn off for me. I think it’s a book that I have to give a miss.

  • I’ve been so bummed by the review I’ve been seeing for this one. I *adore* Renee Carlino and have been so excited for Lucian Divine. I’ve seen a couple really positive reviews but most have been lukewarm at best. *sigh* I’m trying to not let it color my feelings for the book before I even start it. I so want to love it! Enjoyed reading your thoughts, Becca!
