When Becca and I both received copies of Gone Without a Trace from the lovely team at Berkley, we knew we had to buddy-read this one together. We had heard quite a few good things about this book, so last week we decided to dive in and give it a go. (It’s always time for a good mystery, right?!) Our first dabble into Mary Torjussen’s writing was a success!

Hannah’s boyfriend, Matt, disappeared. Not just his physical self, but every single mention of him from Hannah’s life. All of his belongings have disappeared and are replaced by Hannah’s older items. There’s no trace of him on social media or on Hannah’s phone. All photos of him have even vanished. Hannah is at a complete loss as to where Matt has gone and why he up and vanished. Hannah begins trying to find Matt to figure out what happened and just why he disappeared as he did, and that’s where this story gets good.

I have to admit, Becca and I both agreed that the beginning was quite slow and repetitive. We did enjoy it, yet we wanted more. It was a tad long until things really picked up… but once they did, it was awesome! I loved the second half of the book. It was intense and definitely kept my attention stuck on the pages. Though the first half took me several days to get through, I flew through the second half in one sitting. It was awesome!! I loved the way the story played out. The ending was a bit too open-ended for my liking, but overall I really loved it!

My first Mary Torjussen read was a great one! Though I was hoping that the beginning was a bit more intense and gripping, I did find it enjoyable enough to continue on. This was a really fun book to buddy-read with my bestie. I’d definitely recommend this one if you’re looking for a different take on a disappearance story.

Well said Lisa! As a matter of fact it was so well said that I am no exactly sure what to add LOL 😀 The opening of Gone Without a Trace definitely hooked me! Hannah coming home to find Matt and all of his belongings gone was truly fascinating. You know that your’e reading a good mystery when the first few pages capture your attention so quickly that you NEED to find out what has happened and Torjussen totally delivered on that!

I agree that some parts in the beginning and middle were a but redundant and I really wanted the action to pick up, but there were enough curious things going on to keep my attention and make me want to finish. The last 100 pages or so were really good and there were a few excellent twists that had me gasping in surprise! There were also a couple things that left me scratching my head and unsure if I really accepted that as a resolution. I can’t really reveal any of those without spoilers.

Overall, Gone Without a Trace definitely hooked me, kept me interested and shocked me at the end. I am not usually an avid mystery reader, but this one was definitely a fun detour away from my usual genres!
