Travis King is the worst kind of asshole. He taunts me for being a good girl and mocks my high standards. He's cruel, crass, and has enough confidence to last two lifetimes. And I hate him. It wouldn't matter so much if he were avoidable. But considering he's my older brother's best friend and roommate, I see him more than I'd ever want to. His sculpted abs and gorgeous eyes are wasted on such an arrogant man, which makes me hate him even more. Even though I've had a crush on him since I was ten, the feelings weren't mutual and he's always made that very clear. He's always loved getting under my skin and one night against my better judgment, I let him in my bed. I've succumbed to his manwhore ways, but that doesn't change a thing. Because the King is about to get played at his own game-and lose. Checkmate.

The Checkmate series has come highly recommended by so many of my bookish friends (including Lisa)! I received the companion novel for review and decided to read the first two books in the series first! Especially after finding they were available on Audio! This is War is the first book in the series and I began it right away! I loved this entire series so much that I finished the first 3 books in a week!

This is War contains one of my favorite tropes… enemies to lovers! Travis and Viola have know each other since they were kids. Travis is best friends with Viola’s older brother but the two always had a special connection. That is until high school begins and Viola is just a book nerd who Travis has no time for anymore. As Viola watches him become careless and hook up with everyone (including her friends) the hatred in her heart builds until years later they hate one another and fight like crazy anytime they are around each other. When Viola comes to stay in her brother Drew’s apartment for Spring Break (with Travis his roommate) the sparks fly! Especially when Drew leaves to spend the week with his girlfriend and the two are left alone!

I absolutely loved the sparks and quick witted banter between Travis and Viola. It was actually quite hilarious at times! You could feel their dislike of one another (mostly Viola’s) coming off the pages! But you could also feel the underlying tension and passion! I absolutely loved this  about them!

Viola is the  quiet, bookish type… that is until it comes to Travis King! I loved that I could relate to her on so many levels as a bookworm but that there was this other fierce side of her! Travis is a tattooed player with a long line of girls waiting for him. But Viola might be the only one he’s ever really wanted. As Travis and Viola are forced to spend more time together, they cannot ignore the the sexual tension they feel and things heat up pretty quickly!

Oh my gosh you guys I was so hooked I literally could not stop listening! I listened in the car, the grocery store, the shower! You name it I listened! I just had to see what happened next and I was so immersed into all of the FEELS I could not stop myself!

This is War ends on a cliffhanger and I was so happy that I had book 2 right there waiting for me because I dove in immediately!! And of course was sucked right back in! Team Traviola for the win! Kennedy Fox you have officially hooked me!!

The anticipated conclusion of The Checkmate Duet from a secret duo of bestselling authors! Checkmate: This is War is an enemies to lovers romance that will have you crying with laughter one moment and screaming in frustration the next... but you'll be begging to play the game with The King.
Game on.
***Viola Fisher is the epitome of perfection. She despises my one-night stands and mocks my less-than-classy habits. She's smart, beautiful, and too good to be true. And I want her.
If she were anyone else, I'd have made my move years ago, but considering she's my best friend's little sister, she's always been off-limits. Not to mention how much she loathes my very existence.
Hating me is her religion, but needing her is mine. Her sexy curves and filthy smart mouth make me want her even more, and I'm more determined than ever to change her mind.
I'll prove I'm done playing games. But until then, we'll continue to play by her rules.Viola Fisher may have won the battle, but the war isn't over yet.
Checkmate, princess.
*Recommend for ages 18+ due to sexual content and adult language.***This is Love is book in the Checkmate Duet. You must read This is War first.**

*There are no spoilers in this review for This is Love but there will be for This is War (the first book in this series above).*

When I was almost finished with This is War I downloaded This is Love so that I had no waiting time! Not even those pesky two minutes it takes to download an Audiobook 😀 The second I finished This is War I dove right in! I mean, thanks goodness after that ending! This is Love picks up just after the events of This is War. Travis is in the hospital after a terrible car accident, along with Mia (Drew’s ex). We were left wondering what happened and why on Earth Travis and Mia were together and finally get the answers as the book begins.

Obviously this series of events has put a stress on Travis and Viola as they had not even had time to discuss what was happening between the two of them. My heart broke the entire time Travis was in the hospital, one because I felt so bad for him and two because I needed him and Viola together!! The two decide that after all that has happened they are going to wait to tell Drew (Viola’s big brother and Travis’ best friend). They begin sneaking around as Viola helps Travis recover but have to continue to pretend they hate each other… which again their banter was hilarious! I loved these two together! Their passion and connection just leaps off the pages!

So much happens in this book to test their relationship and I really cannot reveal most of it without spoiling all the fun for anyone who hasn’t read this! I will say that there were a lot of ups and downs for Traviola and I loved every single second of their journey! I love this gang so much! Travis and Viola are so awesome and I love Drew and Courtney too – Viola’s bestie! Groups like this of such close friends always make me love a series! Especially companion novels!

I highly recommend this series for all of the contemporary lovers out there! It is sexy and swoony and done to perfection! I have become a HUGE Kennedy Fox Fangirl with this series and I will tell everyone who wants to know (and probably doesn’t want to know too LOL). As soon as I finished this book I immediately dove into This is Reckless which is the first book in Courtney and Drew’s series!
