In this irresistible story, Kasie West explores the timeless question of what to do when you fall for the person you least expect. Witty and romantic, this paperback original from a fan favorite is perfect for fans of Stephanie Perkins and Morgan Matson.
When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.
Only he doesn’t come. No one does.
Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn’s old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax’s side?

“I was locked in the library trying not to panic. Literally locked. As in, no escape. Every door, every window, every air vent.”

I am a huge Kasie West fan! I have read all of her YA Contemporaries and really enjoyed them! They are sweet and warm with just a hint of angst to really drive all of those feels home! When I saw that she had a new release coming out and that it was going to be about two teens trapped in a library I was totally in!

By Your Side begins when Autumn is studying in the library with her friends and when everyone is leaving she runs to the bathroom and is locked in. Autumn is convinced that her friends think she’s with her soon to be boyfriend and he thinks she’s with her friends and that someone will be there to rescue her any minute once they realize this. The only problem is, no one ever shows up and she discovers there is someone else in the library with her. Dax Miller is the resident “bad boy” a foster kid with a bad reputation and a stint in juvie on his record. Neither of them thinks they have anything in common, but a few days locked in the library definitely changes that!

After reading the synopsis I thought that a large portion of the book was going to take place in the library but in fact that was not the main focus of the book. I think that Autumn and Dax’s time in the library was my favorite part of the book though! I really liked  both Autumn and Dax. Autumn was sweet and a loyal friend and had a bad habit of putting everyone else before herself. She was hiding a lot about herself from her group of friends because she was afraid they would not accept her. I really liked Dax a lot, he was just mysterious enough to be interesting and the more I learned about him, the more I liked! Admittedly, these two were not quite as developed as some of Kasie’s past characters but I still really enjoyed them.

“Books, bringing people together.’ That would make a good slogan for the library.”

Autumn’s group of friends and the boy she was trying to date (Jeff) were also a large focus of the book. I really enjoyed most of Autumn’s friends, especially her best friend Lisa. They had such a sweet and supportive friendship and they really “got each other.” She also had such an amazing and supportive family and I love to see that in contemporaries, especially YA.

So while By Your Side was not my most favorite Kasie West, I still really enjoyed it! The whole being trapped in the library story was so fun that I didn’t even care that it was a tad unrealistic.

Kasie West is on my must read Author list! She tackles real and sensitive issues while also providing an adorable and fun contemporary romance. Throughout By Your Side she tackles issues like anxiety disorders, the foster care system and a few others that I can’t reveal without spoilers. But trust me, she brings the feels and the warm fuzzies every time! Without a doubt she always leaves me wanting more! I cannot wait for her next book Lucky in Love!

“Possibilities are exciting and endless. Realities are final”
