The fourth and final installment in the spellbinding series from the irrepressible, #1 New York Times bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater.
All her life, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love's death. She doesn't believe in true love and never thought this would be a problem, but as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she's not so sure anymore.
“The head is too wise. The heart is all fire.”
I guess I should start off by saying that I both loved and hated this book. I had so many questions I needed answers too, so many expectations of what was to come. In the end… I felt robbed. Everything that I had been expecting over the previous 3 books and I felt as though The Raven King did not do the rest of the series justice.
Before I get carried away with my feelings of disappointment and frustration I feel I should talk about what did enjoy first! The Raven King was fantastic in a lot of ways! This group “Blue and the Boys” becomes this family that you just unconditionally love, even more so in the final book when we have grown with them throughout this series. Also, the family at 300 Fox Way is a huge part of that and I found myself in love with them too.
Blue and Gansey are just so right… they are beautiful and innocent and take my breath away! I cannot talk about a certain other couple because that would spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read it… but oh yeah… they took my breath away too! In all the best ways! I didn’t see it coming at first but it was pretty EPIC! I even loved the addition of Charlie! He cracked me up! Blue came into her own in this one! She harnassed her abilities and stopped doubting her future. She is such a unique, fierce and amazing character!
“I don’t care to be pretty,” Blue shot back hotly, “I care to look on the outside like I look on the inside.”
This book also had an awesome creepy factor! Even more so than the others in the series. I got very dark and complex and many times I felt myself holding my breath in anticipation! This journey we had been on throughout the series was coming to an end and the questions that were answered blew my mind and the twists and turns this final book took held me in complete suspense!
I mentioned the questions that were answered, the thing that broke my heart the most were the ones that were NOT. That ending was such a disappointment. I reread it 3 TIMES! I thought I had to have missed something ot not completely understood. That was not the case, it was rushed and a lot of details were left out. A lot was NOT explained well and some were just completely forgotten. I didn’t know if Stiefvater was leaving it up to the reader to deduce for themselves? I do know what I talked to quite a few of my bookish friends and found that they felt the same and that I was not the only one left confused. I am going to include some spoilers below for anyone who has read this so they can know where I’m coming from in my disappointment.
I have heard that Maggie plans to release a spin off series based on Ronan’s character… which I would LOVE! A large part of me hopes that some of the answers I did not get in this finale will be explained in it. I do have to end with the fact that this series was still amazing! It was mysterious, magical and dark with a cast of characters that truly holds your heart. I would do it all over again… answers or not!
“He was a book, and he was holding his final pages, and he wanted to get to the end to find out how it went, and he didn’t want it to be over.”
View Spoiler » « Hide SpoilerFirst, after all that anticipation of Glendower… the dude was just dead? That’s it?! After ALL of that? I was so NOT ok with that! Second… what happened to Noah? Third, what happened to the demon and Piper? What was that whole nonsense with Gansey dying and Cabeswater? Did Gansey become Cabeswater? If so, then what happened to Cabeswater? So many unanswered questions. So many loose ends. It was too much!/spoiler]
“How right it had felt at each moment he had met them all. How certain that they plunged towards something bigger than even this moment.”
