In Lost Rider, the first Western romance in New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Harper Sloan’s Coming Home series, an injured rodeo star encounters an old flame but will she be just what he needs to get back in the saddle?
Maverick Austin Davis is forced to return home after a ten-year career as a rodeo star. After one too many head injuries, he’s off the circuit and in the horse farming business, something he’s never taken much of a shine to, but now that it’s his late father’s legacy, familial duty calls. How will Maverick find his way after the only dream he ever had for himself is over?
Enter Leighton Elizabeth James, an ugly duckling turned beauty from Maverick’s childhood—his younger sister’s best friend, to be exact, and someone whose heart he stomped all over when she confessed her crush to him ten years back. Now Leighton is back in Maverick’s life, no longer the insecure, love-stricken teen—and Maverick can’t help but take notice. Sparks fly between them, but will Leighton be able to open her heart to the one man who broke it all those years ago?
Written in the vein of Diana Palmer and Lindsay McKenna, this Texas-set series is filled with sizzle, heart, and plenty of cowboys!
I have to admit that when I saw the narrators for this Audiobook were Elizabeth Louise and Jason Carpenter I thought… yes please! They are a favorite duo of mine and they rocked this narration (as usual)! This was my first Harper Sloan book and after I read the synopsis I was immediately excited to read it!
Second chance romance is one of my absolute favorite tropes and Sloan did it so well! Maverick Davis is returning to his hometown after a devastating injury ends his ten year rodeo career. Back home awaits Leighton James the girl who’s heart he broke 10 years before. Maverick is hoping to fix all of the things he broke when he left and never looked back.
Both Maverick and Leighton tugged at my heart strings. Maverick was so rugged and had a little bit dark of hood. a dark side from his childhood. He had some pretty amazing growth throughout this novel. I adored Leighton! From the shy and awkward teenage girl with a broken heart, to the fierce girl with a good head on her shoulders who started her own business! Both of these characters really had me rooting for them individually and together!
I really enjoyed their story, it was swoony, romantic and just a little bit country which I loved! Sloan did an excellent job of building the back story so that I felt I really understood who these characters were in the past and in the present.
Another part of the story I loved was Mavericks family, his brother Clay and sister Quinn. They were such an integral part of the story. Quinn being Leighton’s best friend since they were very small girls whose ranches were right next door to one another. The siblings relationships and the friendships between all of these characters was so beautiful and well developed. I am hoping to see these two get their own stories!
Overall I really enjoyed this story and I am eager to read more by Harper Sloan and of course to see what comes next for this series! I am a huge contemporary lover and Sloan has been added to my list of contemporary Authors to watch!
