Ruby Scott is months behind on rent and can’t seem to land a steady job. She has one chance to turn things around with a big audition. But instead of getting her big break, she gets sick as a dog and completely bombs it in the most humiliating fashion. All thanks to a mysterious, gorgeous guy who kissed—and then coughed on—her at a party the night before.
Luckily, her best friend might have found the perfect opportunity; a job staying at the lavish penthouse apartment of hotel magnate Bancroft Mills while he’s out of town, taking care of his exotic pets. But when the newly-evicted Ruby arrives to meet her new employer, it turns out Bane is the same guy who got her sick.
Seeing his role in Ruby’s dilemma, Bane offers her a permanent job as his live-in pet sitter until she can get back on her feet. Filled with hilariously awkward encounters and enough sexual tension to heat a New York City block, Shacking Up, from NYT and USA Today bestselling author Helena Hunting, is sure to keep you laughing and swooning all night long.
“Well, you were kissing me, so . . .” I have to bite back the smile at her incredulity.
She points her spoon at me, her annoyance clear. “You kissed me.”
I shift an arm behind my head. “You didn’t put up much of a fight.”
I have read several books by Helena Hunting and enjoyed them all! She writes contemporary romance with a lot of heart, a good dose of humor and a an awesome swoon factor! When I heard that she had a new stand alone coming out I was eager to read it!
Shacking Up is the story of Ruby, an actress, singer and dancer who is having trouble finding work in the Big City and is refusing to work for her Father’s business. An impromptu meeting that ends with a mistaken kiss leaves Ruby sick with the flu which completely ruins her audition and therefore her only means of income. Ruby ends up needing to leave her tiny apartment and has no place to go and her last resort is crawling back to her Father. Until her best friend comes up with a solution… house sitting for Bancroft Mills (Bane) a very sexy and rich ex- rugby player who needs to travel a lot for his new job. When the two meet, Ruby realizes that Bane is the very man who got her sick and got her into this mess! Bane offers Ruby the job until she can get back on her feet, feeling a bit guilty for getting her sick in the first place.
I really liked Ruby a lot, she was doing her best to follow her heart and be her own person. Despite the wealth of her family, she wanted to make it on her own in the career that she loved. She was sweet, funny and such a warm and likable character!
“Carving our own path rather than blindly following the one that was laid for us takes infinitely more courage.”
Bane was… holy hotness!! He was sexy and confident and an ex rugby player… need I say more?! But he had this sweet, gentle and humorous side when it came to Ruby and his pets. It pretty much made me melt!
I loved how Bane and Ruby were friends first. Then their nightly face time sessions with the pets led them to a lot of flirting and innuendo, but their friendship and easy banter is what stole my heart first! It took a bit for the romance to develop because Bane was traveling for work and we witnessed them more through phone conversations and text, but I was ok with that because it was very well done and I didn’t feel like I was waiting. I enjoyed the slow burn of their romance.
Once again, Helena Hunting has made me laugh, swoon and fan myself all in one book! She has been a favorite contemporary Author of mine since the Clipped Wings series and she will remain there! I cannot wait to see what she writes next!
“Every kiss is an echo of the first time. Accidental or not, some part of me recognized her as my future and now she’s mine to love.”
